Resources & Places In California For The Occupationally Disabled To Go For Assistance.
Available in the State of California are local disability advocacy organizations whose sole purpose is to assist the
disabled to cope with everyday activities. Many of the occupationally disabled don't even know that they exist! It's a real
shock to find your life turned upside down, and one feels so helpless that he is no longer able to perform simple daily
functions that he or she used to just take for granted. These orgainizations are there to help you adjust to your new
situation. Some of these services offered are:
- Assistive Technology, which can be in the form of simple things such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, knee braces or manual
and power wheelchairs, or as technologically sophisticated as voice activated computer systems.
- Housing Accessibility Modifications, which can consist of handrails, grab bars and wheelchair ramps.
- Shopping Assistance for the Homebound, for those who are unable to leave their homes, or are unable to lift or
carry groceries.
- Financial Benefits Counseling Programs, that provide training and support in the areas of financial management,
record keeping, budgeting, credit cards, benefit application and hearing procedures.
- Volunteers In Money Management, who help people with basic money management by sorting and paying bills,
origanizing money management, preparing health-insurance claims and other related services.
- Counseling & Peer Counseling Programs, that help people to better understand disabilities emotionally by
exploring many subjects and issues that may include:
- Adjustment To Disability
- Job Stress
- Self-image, Self-esteem, and Self-acceptance
- Emotional Support
- Relationship Difficulties
- Hidden Disabilities
